Ernestina Logbook Page

Date: Thursday, June 1, 2000
Time: 1215 EDT

Schooner Ernestina is underway from Vineyard Haven today sailing back through Quicks' Hole and across Buzzards Bay with 17 Elderhostelers aboard in the midst of a six-day program that will finish in New Bedford on Saturday morning, June 3rd.

The plan for this evening is to anchor off South Dartmouth in Clarks Cove or off Ricketsons Point. You can see the soundings (or depths) in feet on the chart. Ernestina draws 13 feet and so the captain must look carefully at the chart to determine the best place to anchor. Also muddy (M) or sandy (S) bottoms are better holding ground for anchoring then a rocky (Rk) bottom. Ernestina's anchor weighs about 750 pounds.

The ship will arrive tomorrow around midday at Tonnessen Park at New Bedford State Pier for an afternoon of visits in the National Park.
