Schooner Ernestina has departed Port
Jefferson after a nice sail with the Long Island
Seaport Ecology Center on Friday and an open ship
at Danford's Marina on Saturday (earlier today)
midday. The track to the
right shows the ship moving into the western part
of Long Island Sound and finding an anchorage in
Manhasset Bay for the night.
The crew will rise early for
the passage through Hell Gate near breakfast time
tomorrow morning with the tide turning SW at
0639. For Hell Gate, you wait for the tide.
Hell Gate is at the confluence
of the East and Harlem Rivers. The Rivers mark
the eastern side of Manhattan and connect Hell
Gate to the Hudson River via the Harlem and to
New York Harbor via the East River. Originally,
the channel was much narrower but they blasted it
open at the turn of the century to make it
navigable. Even so, the tide can run up to 5.2
knots on spring tides.
