Schooner Ernestina sails from the
Fireboat House at Corlears Hook at the base of
the Williamsburg Bridge in the East River on
Manhattan. The program today is for a fundraising
effort with Outstanding Renewal Enterprises also
know as the Lower East Side Ecology Center who
are doing great work restoring access and use of
the waterfront for residents of the Lower East
Side through the development of a showcase
compost facility, garden areas and outdoor
learning space. The Tennessee Scout Troop 444 is
off exploring the 'Big City' with a trip to South
Street Seaport Museum. The
track to the right shows the ship moving down the
East River past the South Street Seaport Museum
on the southeastern end of Manhattan with the Peking
and Lettie G. Howard at dock and the
Schooner Pioneer out sailing.
Our track runs down into the
Buttermilk Channel between Brooklyn and
Governor's Island (prior base of operations for
the U.S. Coast Guard) before turning back toward
a reception at the dock from 1400-1600.
You can see Liberty Island and
the footprint of the Statue of Liberty on the
lower left side of the image with the 'U'-shaped
Ellis Island, where many immigrants entered
America, just above it. The tip of Manhattan in
the upper center of the image is called 'The
Battery.'
The weather is controlled again
today by the Bermuda High Pressure system that
keeps pumping humid air in from the SW.
The ship will be underway this
afternoon for a trip up the Hudson with the Boy
Scouts.
