Schooner Ernestina lays at anchor in the
Hudson River this morning off Piermont Pier just
south of the Tappan Zee bridge (more of those
Dutch names) at the northern end of the 200 foot
high Palisades just north of the New Jersey
border. Piermont Pier was originally the terminus
for a ferry that took New York bound train
travelers across the river to pick up the train
again in Dobbs Ferry before completing their
journey to the city. Yesterday
afternoon the scouts got out to the Piermont
marsh, a National Marine Estuary, by dory and
took a close look at river ecology.
The ship will be underway
traveling south today with a fair northerly
breeze. Drills are completed and the scouts are
ready for the open sea! Next stop is slated to be
Sandy Hook by tonight, a forty-mile voyage back
down the Hudson, out New York Harbor past the
Narrows and across the Lower Bay.
