The dories are over this morning from our
anchorage at the mouth of the Sassafras River.
We're bending on the fore gaff tops'l and will
have a first sail for this trip (as we have had
to use nothing but the engine so far) to
celebrate the solstice. Last
night while on anchor watch 12 to 1am, a haunting
MOOOO began in the distance. It went on all
night: maybe a relative of one of the cows Capt.
Bob Bartlett used to carry aboard on deck from
New York City to Brigus, Newfoundland for his
mother as he began the journey to the Arctic each
year.
The scenery is much less
industrial on this side of the Canal. As the
chart shows, we have little water under
Ernestina's keel at a draft of 13'.
The inset chart image shows our
track from yesterday in green. Ernestina
transited through three states!
A warm front is approaching and
we should end up off Turkey Point towards the
West end of the C & D entrance tonight in
preparation for an early morning transit back to
the Delaware River and on into Wilmington for the
beginning of the TallShip Delaware event starting
midday tomorrow.
