Schooner Ernestina sailed in the Sail
Boston 2000 Parade of Sail. After an early morning 5am gathering at
UMASS Boston by folks from Lotus/IBM, UMASS
Boston and Yankee Publishing, along with a film
crew and Lisa Hughes from WBZ Channel 4, all
headed out to Ernestina at anchor in the Boston
Harbor Islands just SE of Long Island to get
aboard with the UMASS Boston program underway.
This started a spectacular day of ships parading
into Boston Harbor from all over the world. We're
especially thankful to Chris Sweeney for running
the M/V Hurricane to get all of those joining the
ship for the day out to the ship.
The images to the right show
Kruzenshtern and Amerigo Vespucci along with the
Pride of Baltimore and Corwith Cramer underway.
You can see Ernestina's track in the mustering
area during the morning on the upper chart before
reentering the harbor escorting the Pride of
Baltimore by early afternoon. Nahant is in the
upper end of the image with the ship currently
entering the Main Channel.
Huge numbers of people were out
at Castle Island to view the ships. Lisa Hughes
sent up a running commentary to Channel 4 direct
from the decks of the ship. By all reports, the
coverage was great for the day! We appreciate
Lisa and the team and their efforts to get the
story out about these great ships.
The Parade ran all the way in
to Charlestown (as shown on the lower chart
image) before we turned to run out to drop
everyone off at the JFK Library in the early
evening and return for the night to lie alongside
the Eye of the Wind for the night at Hoosac Pier
across from the USS Constitution. We would like to extend sincere thanks
to Jay Messana for running the launch to get
folks off and on at the JFK Library.
The inset chart image shows our
dockage at Hoosac Pier in Charlestown.
