Thursday started off with a sail with
Gruntal, Inc. in the busy harbor including a
dramatic moment when a small boat caught fire and
rescue boats ran out to their assistance. Later
in the afternoon, after getting back to the dock,
we prepared the ship for the next program coming
aboard. The next program
is overnight with Munson Institute of Mystic
Seaport Museum. After boarding, Thursday, July 13
at 5pm, we departed Charlestown for a view of the
Tall Ships and then set sail for the evening
before coming to anchor late at night off
Peddocks Island in the Harbor Islands. Once
underway before dawn this morning, the red track
shows the maneuvering of the ship during the day.
We packed a lot into a 24 hour period on this
one! You can see the ship approaching Nantasket
Roads, one of the entrances to Boston Harbor,
around midday Friday.
Tonight we're in at Fan Pier
alongside the LORD NELSON for an informal
reception with a special focus on the connections
between the National Park Service, State Agencies
such as ours (Department of Environmental
Management-DEM), Boston Harbor Islands, and the
Legislators from the House and Senate. We are
pleased to have Sen. Morrissey, staff from Sen.
Hedlund's office and Rep. Speliotis on the rsvp
list. Betsy Shure Gross, special assistant for
Community Preservation representing Secretary Bob
Durand and the Executive Office of Environmental
Affairs will also be there along with Deborah
Cary from the DEM Board. The National Park
Service has a very important presence in Boston
with the Charlestown Navy Yard and the Boston
Harbor Islands Park. Schooner Ernestina is part
of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical
Park. Sarah Peskin and George Price and others
are stopping by for a visit.
