The Patriots Trail Girl Scouts boarded
Ernestina Saturday morning at Boston Fan Pier at
the new Federal Court House building across the
deck of the LORD NELSON, a ship from the United
Kingdom that specializes in programs for persons
with physical disabilities. The ship is
wheelchair accessible. After
a briefing and initial orientation, Ernestina got
off the dock to go over across the harbor for
fuel and then exit Boston Harbor bound for
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. By 1349 Saturday the
Ernestina was at the Mo (A) Buoy (that's Morse
Code 'A' buoy that flashes dot-dash) at the
entrance to Boston Harbor North Channel and the
departure point for many a voyage.
By 1805 Saturday eve we came to
anchor in the Outer Harbor just inside the
breakwater and off Eastern Point in Gloucester.
You can see our track in red and our anchorage
for the first night of the voyage.
Most of the rain came through
Sunday morning between 0100 and 0300 while we lay
at anchor. Winds SE at Force 3 (9-15 knots)
Here is the weather synopsis:
Low pressure over upstate NY and PA will remain
stationary through tonight, then begin to weaken
and diminish Monday. Winds 10-20 knots, gusty and
diminishing by Monday.
We went over safety drills at
anchor this morning (Sunday) and got underway by
noon heading ENE 'down east' along the coast
toward Isles of Shoals. We sailed off the hook!
Southwesterlies are predicted to fill in and will
be a fair breeze.
Now as we head out into the
Gulf of Maine on our way to cross the Bay of
Fundy, there are some folks visiting the rail. As
we round Twin Lights on Thatchers Island and turn
off the wind a bit, the motion should improve.
