The Schooner Ernestina has come alongside
in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The Patriots Trail Girl
Scouts have crossed the Gulf of Maine! The approach to the Nova Scotian coast
requires a careful lookout up forward and radar
watch with the low visibility. The fog horn
sounds regularly to warn other ships of our
location. We're thankful to the Henry H. Crapo
Foundation for their recent donaton of a new
radar for the ship!
The inset image shows the
closeup of the dock location in Yarmouth Harbor
at the end of a long approach channel.
We arrived in the harbor at
10:30 this morning but needed to hang off the
pier as the herring fishery got underway. Then
customs & immigration came aboard to inspect
the ship and check the crew and passenger lists
for entry into Canada.
What a wonderful welcome from
the community! Radio and newspapers were down at
the dock. We opened the ship for the public for a
hour around lunchtime. The pier is high and the
tidal range is 16' here! It increases into the
Bay of Fundy to 50' or so.
Tonight we had a hawser toss
and evening program for the Girl Scouts and then
had to move to another pier for the night.
Tomorrow the Girl Scouts will
board the Bar Harbor Ferry for a passage back
across the Gulf.
Wind: NE'ly light going
