Schooner Ernestina got underway for the
Parade of Sail at 0840 to sail fourth in line
behind Bluenose from Nova Scotia, Mir from Russia
and Oosterschelde from Holland. Behind us came
Gloria, Concordia and Kruzenshtern. The crowds cheered to the TallShips 2000
banner some of the younger members of the crew
aboard created as we went! They even colored in
the flags of the nations represented in this
great event. We sent four lowers, jib topsail,
and main gaff topsail for the five mile loop with
close swings in to give the viewers a good look.
After a full counterclockwise
run we continued on with a great group aboard
bound for Lunenburg forty-five miles West. We
arrived at 1940 to a large cheering crowd and a
waiting liaison who briefed us on the services
and activities while in port.
You can see in the lower chart
image the track we ran to Lunenburg with an inset
of the harbor. Another great stop for the ship!
Many people come by who have a special connection
especially during her fishing or arctic
exploration years.
We would like to thank Alan
Creaser (owner of a local restaurant "The
Grand Banker"), Bill Towndrow
(harbormaster), Peter Brown, Peter Evans and Dan
Moreland (captain of Picton Castle and prior
captain of Ernestina) for their great hospitality
and assistance! Also we'd like to thank Bob
Murchie, our liaison, for his help.
