Last night we came to anchor at 2320 in
Wreck Cove on the southern end of Long Island
adjacent to Hussey Sound. It was a welcome sound
to have the anchor run out and to see the anchor
light raised for a break for the night before the
Parade of Ships into Portland today. The green
track to the right shows our approach. Aside from the regular watchstanding on
short watches thorughout the night, we all got a
good nights rest despite the rolling swell that
came in from the Gulf of Maine.
During the morning the New
England Aquarium crew rose to the task of
cleaning the ship from stem to stern.
At 1030 we began hauling back
the anchor a link at a time with a pull on the
bar equalling a link worth of the 120 feet out.
Just as we were about to break the anchor off the
bottom, Barque Eagle appeared rounding the point
in Hussey Sound just at the entrance of our cove.
We motored out to line up
behind the Californian and Harvey Gamage with the
Arctic explorer Schooner Bowdoin behind us. You
can see the Bowdoin and the Full-rigged Ship
Cisne Branco in the image to the right.
The track in red shows the
Parade path out Casco Bay and back in the main
channel past Portland light. After a spin up into
the inner harbor the ship is shown alongside at
Portland Yacht Service along with the Schooner
Bowdoin.
New England Aquarium students
climb aloft, present their bioluminescent sea
creature creations, put on a songfest with
original lyrics and correography and pose for a
group shot before departing with parents and
friends and the great New England Aquarium staff
who worked hard to make this challenging trip
happen. Thanks so much to Julie Crump and Seth
Epstein for their work in putting this together
with Crista.
The day is not done for the
Ernestina crew. Several hours after the Aquarium
group leaves we set up for an ondeck reception
and fireworks viewing with Swardlick Marketing
Group.
