Ernestina Logbook Page

Date: Friday, August 4, 2000
Time: 1500 EDT

Today started with the arrival of logs from Western Massachusetts that will be shaped into a new bowsprit, gaffs and jumbo club for Ernestina. The logs were offloaded by a crane and moved into the shed on the SW corner of State Pier. The Azorean Whaleboat recently launched by the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society is also stored in the space.

The acquisition of the timbers represents a great partnership between the state and historic resources like Schooner Ernestina and Schooner Adventure in Gloucester who alos received some trees. It is one of the reasons reforestation was taking place here at the turn of the century.

Next Secretary Bob Durand of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, Mindy Lubber, regional administrator for the EPA, and Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz of New Bedford announced the designation of Buzzards Bay as a no discharge zone. Representatives Tony Cabral and George Rogers were present along with Jim Marshall from Senator Mark Montigny's office and Peter Webber, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Management. The press conference took place in Tonnessen Park from the decks of the Schooner Ernestina to a crowd gathered for the great news. A reception followed in the Park. Many thanks to Len Gonsalves, Executive Director of the Buzzards Bay Action Committee and Selectman from Dartmouth who arranged the event and also is a great partner in education for our joint "Watershed to the Bay" dockside programs.

After the press conference the pumpout boat came alongside Ernestina to pump the septic tank out. No sooner said than done! (We've been using pumpouts for some time now)

This evening Schooner Ernestina sailed with teachers lead by Bob Bailey for a math/science daylong institute. The chart image below shows various stations onboard the ship looking at mechanical advantage, marine sciences and navigation. Bob developed a full series of activities ashore in Ernestina's facility during the afternoon in preparation for the 6-10pm sail.
