Schooner Ernestina approaches Aucoot Cove
for the night after sailing across Buzzards Bay
from the Weepecket Islands anchorage last night.
This is the second day underway for the
"Portraits of a Port" Summer Institute
for teachers in history/social sciences funded by
the Massachusetts Department of Education.
Ernestina has co-sponsored the institute with the
New Bedford Whaling Museum for the past four
years. Today was a busy
day with swim call, dory rowing, bowsprit and
shroud climbing along with more academic stations
like Cape Verdean history with Traudi, plankton
tows and observations, family immigration stories
and music of the sea with Tom Goux. A special
event was Ukranian songs with Olena Marques, a
teacher at New Bedford High School who recently
immigrated.
Special thanks to Judy Guisti
who is a veteran of Schooner Ernestina's several
summer institutes and active New Bedford Whaling
Museum and Ernestina volunteer. She is with us
for the entire ten-day institute as a lead
teacher and resource.
