Schooner Ernestina sailed from Cape Ann
Saturday afternoon with 28 members aboard, struck
topsails at dusk, and sailed through the night in
steady southerly breeze that veered (shifted
clockwise) towards dawn. Our trackline follows
Bigelow bight by chance as we sailed By and
Large. By and Large means sailing way off the
wind as close to down wind as practical while
keeping the sails all full and not blanketed. The
helm command gives the mate on watch helmsperson
the responsibility for altering course slightly
to accommodate wind shifts and get the most out
of the sails. The course track shown steadily
turned toward the east before gybing in response
to the southerly to southwesterly veer of the
wind. Great stars.
Samantha (mate aboard) worked the sextant, and
members were busy standing watch.
We had breakfast off Cape
Elizabeth and motored to the dock at Portland
Yacht Services by 0920.
Members depart and there is now
a short turnaround for the Greens Farms Academy
trip
in a 'convoy with schooners Harvey Gamage and
Lettie G. Howard. GFA boarded at 1700.
Orientation takes place
dockside, amidst a swarm of mosquitoes. We will
depart early AM tomorrow.
