Schooner Ernestina got underway early. We
set the four lowers and jib tops'l before
breakfast and sailed out past Portland Head
Light. We have 18 students and two chaperons
aboard from Greens Farms Academy (CT) for the
week. We see Schooners Harvey Gamage and Lettie
G. Howard sailing off our stern. We are working
jointly with the Ocean Classroom Foundation for
this program. Today we
plan to stay in Casco Bay area and sail towards
Richmond Isle for tonight's anchorage. We just
completed a set of drills and 'Watch Quarter and
Station Bill' class beginning after lunch.
Classes on sail theory and team
building are ongoing as we tack with the two
other schooners. Watches are doing well, and have
taken on all responsibility for the ship
operations. Participants step aboard and rapidly
become part of the ship's crew!
Junior Watch Officers are
assigned, participants who, in turn, work closely
with the mates to manage their watches. All
aboard are getting good practice tacking the
ship, including the Main Topsail. We'll be ready
for Gloucester next weekend!
The bottom image shows our
anchorage just the other side of Cape Elizabeth
from Portland.
Wind: NW fresh, Mild cold front
due tonight.
Visibility: Good with calm seas, wind off the
land.
