We sailed through the gut between
Appledore and Malaga Islands in the Isles of
Shoals on the Maine-New Hampshire border eight
miles off the coast under four lowers, jib tops'l
and main gaff tops'l. Schooner Harvey Gamage
followed but the Lettie G. Howard went in to
Portsmouth for a dropoff. Appledore Island is the site of Cornell
University's and University of New Hampshire's
marine laboratory. Excellent Marine Science
programs along with several research projects in
marine sciences and ornithology are ongoing. Both
Capt. Willi Bank and Executive Director Gregg
Swanzey have spent a couple summers here.
Cormorants, Ibis, Snowy Egrets and a rich
inter-tidal zone abound!
We're now anchored off
Appledore for the evening. The evening program
includes a 'schooner gam' with all students
coming on board Ernestina for a musical get
together. Jim C. from the Ocean Classroom is
playing banjo and others have guitars in hand.
Students departed to home Schooners at 2230.
