Today we have a sail with the South
Boston High School thanks to a grant from the
Boston Marine Society. The trip departed Fan Pier
at 0930 and returned 1330. You can see the
overall track for the day in the first chart
image with closeup views of the Boston North
Channel off Deer Island and another chart image
off Boston Fan Pier. The
students are great learners with good questions
and an eagerness to take on each station as it
comes. You can see from the inset images the
plankton station (with Deer Island Sewage
Treatment Plant in the background), mechanical
advantage, navigation, and more active stations
like a trip out on the bowsprit and helm.
South Boston High School
teacher, Carl Johnson, has been doing programs on
sailing ships for years with a close association
with Massachusetts Marine Educators and as a Sea
Connections Summer Institute teacher. We
appreciate Carl's insight into the strength of
on-the-water programs and his advocacy for
ship-based programs.
