Today we sailed with Cabot LNG including
29 passengers on board. One of their LNG
tankers, the MATTHEW, left the harbor
shortly before the sail. Because their plant is
located up the Mystic river we took a tour up
under the Tobin bridge for a view of their
"neighborhood," setting the fore and
jumbo on the way. They showed us the berth
for their tankers, the offloading terminal, and
the storage tanks. Traudi gave a brief
ERNESTINA history lecture on the way back out of
the River. Winds were light and variable
out of the North, so the remainder of the trip
was a motorsail out Boston Harbor as far as the
Deer Island Light (the passengers wanted to see
"open water") and back. Several
of them expressed enthusiasm for not only having
a day out on the water (and away from the
office), but for being able to do so with the
ERNESTINA. It was a cool, crisp fall day
with temperatures ranging in the lower 60's: a
beautiful day for being on the water. The crew spent the rest of the afternoon
putting a reef in the mains'l for impending poor
weather on our transit to New Bedford, and
preparing for the next program.
The ship has been busy with
several days of maintenance. Despite dire
weather predictions, we've been able to fulfill
our autumn painting quota. The covering
boards forward got much-needed attention, as did
the engine room hatch, aft cabin top, wheelbox
and dory chocks. The entire foredeck
received a long-overdue oiling, and minor repairs
were completed on the new rail aft by the
helm. Minor projects included touching up
the varnish in the aft cabin companionway, and
applying non-skid to the forward ladder into the
focsle.
