Today we sailed with the Mystic Aquarium
aboard with informal learning stations and
presentations for those that were interested. We
set the four lowers on this beautiful Fall day
with the breeze perfect and the temperature just
right. It can be quite another story when colder
air works its way down out of Canada this time of
year. You can see the track at right in light
blue. We enjoy getting out on the water with
partners in education like Mystic Aquarium. We had special guests aboard. Doug and
Claudia Mills and their kids came along. They
have done an incredible job renovating the
building our offices are in at 89 North Water
Street and have The Essence Grill up and
running.
Several friends were also
aboard from Neva River Clearwater based
in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Hannah Kalkstein, who has
worked for Sloop Clearwater in the
Hudson Valley and went to Russia to work with
Clearwater's Russian counterparts, drove Marilyn
Barden from Sweden and Konstantin
"Kostya" Nemchinov from St. Petersburg
to visit Save the Harbor, Save the Bay
in Boston, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
in New York and Ernestina in New
Bedford.
Marilyn Barden is involved with
Swedish aid authorities and organizations in the
funding and development of Neva River
Clearwater and other projects like Sailing
for Peace in the Baltic. She originally
suggested the idea after a trip she had made on Clearwater
and meeting Pete Seeger in the late 1980s. She
acts as the NRC international coordinator and
contributes great energy, materials and other
resources to this effort.
Under the leadership of Kostya
Nemchinov young people are given the opportunity
to learn about the Neva River through field
trips. They become riverwatchers and take
photographs, make maps and present reports of
their work to government officials. Each year the
NRC organizes two expeditions on the Neva River.
Festivals are arranged in the villages that line
the river. At present he is managing the
restoration of a building for use by a marine
school.
Neva River Clearwater
was launched at an environmental festival held in
St. Petersburg in 1992, arranged by the
Finnish-Russian Society with participation from
Sweden.
