We
have some fine Wx this week as High Pressure sits
over the Carolinas. Spent the last day of April
alongside the Fall River Line State Pier tackling
deck projects. We are docked on the South Face
and get plenty of Sunshine and Fresh air to dry
paint on the Schooner's Rails and Hull. A Cargo
vessel lies astern of us, the MV CABO VERDE. This
7000 gross ton ship is in port for a few weeks to
load goods and automobiles bound for Cape Verde.
Our Anthropologist Traudi Coli made a passage on
the CABO VERDE this winter to Cape Verde. She
spent 20 days underway, with the large Diesel
engine chugging all the way. Traudi gave the crew
of the Ernestina a tour of the ship. We had
Durfee High School from Fall River on Board for a
4 hour program this morning. We got underway at
0900, and set the 4 Lowers, and motorsailed into
the Light SSW Breeze until we were close to
Mt. Hope. All hands enjoyed a quiet sail while
participating in five learning stations which
included Lookout and Helm, Plankton, History of
Ernestina, Navigation, and A Shark Lecture. Lunch
was a great big picnic on deck in the Summer
weather. We sailed downwind towards the
dock after the Stations, and the students donned
harness and experienced a climb out on the
Bowsprit. We struck sail, turned on the engine
and returned to the dock by 1300. What a great
day out on Mt. Hope Bay!
