Another
great warm weather day! All hands set sail (four
lowers) in Mt Hope Bay with 43 participants from
Springfield High School of Science and
Technology. Groups studied celestial navigation
with the sextant, marine science using electronic
sampling equipment, displacement or weight of the
vessel (calculating the density of the water in
the estuary , and the volume of the ship below
the water). Other activities touched on calculus,
statistics, and old fashioned observations while
enjoying the sunshine. In addition, the students
sailed the ship in the gentle SW breeze, taking
turns on the helm. We returned to the Fall River
Line Pier at 2 pm. During the Members Sail in
the evening, the New Bedford Harbor Sea Shanty
Chorus made up much of the group onboard. Again
we set the four lowers, and sailed in the easy SW
breeze in Mt. Hope Bay. Six crewmembers from the
MV Cabo Verde joined us, as well as some new
members from Fall River who came by the schooner
this week. Everyone took part in raising sail and
steering the ship as she tacked and gybed
in the Bay.
Most members and singers departed the
ship, but some stayed as the crew of the Cabo
Verde returned with their own instruments
for an international improv until lights out at
2200.
