We
boarded 55 students and chaperones from the
Nichols School. Got underway at 0930 after a
safety briefing, and set the Four lowers in the
Harbor. We motorsailed out the Hurricane Barrier,
until we cleared Negro Ledge, and then sailed
across Buzzards Bay towards Naushon. The students
got involved in Learning Stations on Deck which
included History, Navigation, Water Quality
(salinity, PH, Density), Simple Machines, and
Helm/Lookout. After Lunch on Deck, we sailed back
across Buzzards Bay to Nasketucket Bay (near West
Island) for an Otter Trawl. We took time to do 2
tows, while under sail only. Our sampling found
only Crabs, and some Seaweed. We then motorsailed
around West I. to make for New Bedford Harbor.
After a day full of Sunshine, and a steady
Southwest Wind, we struck sails, and returned to
the dock at 1600. A good trip with a great group
of students. Captain:
