Ernestina
got underway from Tonnessen Park in New Bedford
at 1300 with 27 guests onboard for "Call me
Ishmael "sail in Celebration of the 150th
anniversary Moby Dick in print. In New Bedford
Harbor we set the Fore and Jumbo, under sunny
skies, and gentle SouthEast breeze. Herman
Melville's classic tale of whaling and seafaring
came to life in Song and Spoken word. The ships
company, led by Tom Goux, sang a chantey or two,
and hauled on the halyards to raise the heavy
gaffs and spread of canvas. Later, Tom returned
as Capt Ahab, and read of the different Whales
featured in Moby Dick. Young sailors took turns
at the helm, and held firmly the Harpoon as old
Quequeg did. Our cruise track shows our course
under sail alone once we cleared Butler Flats
Light. Some young Navigators took turns plotting
on a chart, and using the sextant.
We returned to the Harbor at 1600, and soon
after finished the day alongside Tonnesson Park.
All in all a fine afternoon spent in Buzzards
Bay, aboard a nineteenth century sailing ship.
