Clear
skies and light westerly in the Harbor this
morning. We boarded 51 persons from Auburn Middle
School (near Worcester), led by Jeff Rudert, and
got underway just after 1000. Set all four lower
sails in the Harbor, and shut down the Main
Engine after clearing the Hurricane Barrier. A
really beautiful day for sailing on Buzzards Bay.
The group split up for classes on deck, and took
turns steering the schooner, standing lookout on
the bow, towing a plankton net and investigating
samples under a microscope, practical navigation,
schooner thesaurus, and simple machines (lever,
axle, pulley) aboard the schooner. Simple
machines is taught by Paul Anthony, a relative of
Jeff Rudert, and frequent volunteer aboard
Ernestina. At 1200 we 'Hove To' on a port tack
in the middle of the Bay, and all hands took a
break for lunch. The breezy conditions, and
slight chop presented a small challenge for those
not familiar with shipbord meals.
After lunch students had two more classes, and
then helped strike sail as we made our way back
into the Harbor.
