At
1000, 53 students and chaperones boarded the
Schooner Ernestina at Tonnesson Park on the New
Bedford State Pier. After a Safety Briefing, we
got underway, and motored into the middle of the
Harbor. The skies were clear, and the wind calm.
We set the Four Lower sails, and motored through
the Gate at the Hurricane Barrier, and out the
Entrance channel. After 1050 the wind began to
fill from the South so the Main Engine was shut
down, and we sailed southeast towards Woods Hole.
The students were split into 5 groups as in the
other 2 sails with Auburn MS this week, and the
same class structure followed. After lunch, and
'Silent Sail', we turned back to the North
towards New Bedford. On the horizon the Schooner
Alcyone hailed us on the VHF. Alcyone has sailed
from Port Townsend, Washington on her way to
Ireland. We struck sail as we came through the
Gate, and were back alongside at 1400. The
schooner Alcyone join us for the night on the
State Pier.
