Trip #3 For the past few days
Matt Manfredi has been the school leader for
these student programs. Today he has passed this
role on to trusted team members and signed on as
crew for the final voyage.
Once again we boarded and
sailed off under fair skies bound for a quiet
harbor, though many were reluctant to sleep with
the excitement of new surroundings and
experiences. Morning was slightly overcast and
promising only very light breezes so we chose to
stay at anchor and launch the dories. Though
rowing can be quite a challenge the students got
the hang of it quickly, and those who were not
taking their turn rowing could see the progress
from high over the decks in the rigging or out on
the bow sprit. Later in the morning we raised
anchor and set sail to make our way back to
Greenport. Again students stood watch and learned
of the Maritime History that has helped to
develop their area.
Three pm had us back at dock
giving final farewells to the seventh grade
class. The school and community have been great
hosts and given us such a warm welcome.
Many thanks go to Dennis Claire
who has been responsible for pulling together the
many facets that a program and community effort
such as this require!
