Enroute
Geenport, LI to Nantucket with Members Aboard A very foggy morning
as we got underway from our anchorage in
Tarpaulin Cove on Naushon Island. Day 2 of our
transit from Greenport LI to Nantucket takes us
into Vineyard Sound, and Nantucket Sound. The
Schooners Lettie G. Howard and Spirit of Mass.
sailed off in Company on their way to Block
Island. We passed Block yesterday but never laid
eyes on it. Thick fog requires good ears on Bow
watch. Among the 5 members we have on board for
the transit is Ed Jackson. Ed is a captain with
the Steamship Authority which operates the Ferry
service from the Mainland to the Islands of
Marthas Vineyard, and Nantucket. He is all ears
on Lookout.
We set the Fore
and Jumbo in the light Southerly, and motorsail
past Woods Hole, and Vineyard Haven. The Breeze
filled in a little as we transit Cross Rip, and
we shut down the Main Engine for some quiet
sailing. Not exactly silent sailing because we
continue to sound our Fog Signal; one prolonged
blast followed by Two Short, every 2 minutes.
Lots of other
vessel Traffic on the Radar. Fast Ferries from
Hyannis to Nantucket pass the Schooner like low
flying planes on the Radarscope.
As we approach
Nantucket Harbor to the South, we strike Sail and
Motor on. The heat of the midday sun is able to
'burn off' the Fog North of the Island, and
suddenly, visibility returns about one mile
offshore. 130 miles and two days of travel in the
miasmic Fog "dissapears" as our visible
world expands beyond the deck of our Schooner.
Welcome to
Nantucket. We arrive alongside the Boat Basin at
1400, and Members and Crew go ashore to explore.
At 1700 we have a
Cape Verdean Potluck on board, and invite all
dockside visitors to tour
the vessel.
Special thanks to Stephen Wolfe
for sending along some of the photos!
