Youth Four-day
Youth Sail: 1st Day Life before Ernestina is but a foggy
memory. We arrived at the New Bedford State Pier
at 0830, eager to shun the familiar habits and
nagging rituals of teenage family life. Bearing
only the essentials, we swaggered aboard the
vessel, new hands and old alike. With the help of
funding from Mayor Kaliszs office, 8 New
Bedford students found their sea legs and became
part of the crew. The Schooner Quinnipac, of New
Haven, CT, provided 4 students and marine
biologist, Sarah DeGumbia to complete the crew.
After a brief safety talk, Ernestina glided out
into New Bedford harbor and the foresail and
jumbo were set.
Watches were set and an
underway orientation ensued. A thick fog quickly
enveloped the ship, reducing visibility to less
than a quarter of a mile. The foggy weather
didnt dampen any appetites as Brendas
wonderful lunch came on deck. All enjoyed the
taste of Mexico with chicken and beef fajitas.
Daisy chains square knots, slip knots, and clove
hitches became common knowledge to the new crew.
We reached our anchorage of
Tarpaulin Cove at 1500. This is on the south side
of lovely Naushon Island. The eager participants,
battling strong winds and currents, rowed
Ernestinas dories with a strong spirit of
team work to reach the shores of Naushon. A
refreshing hour-long swim call was enjoyed by
all. After rowing back to the ship, Brenda again
prepared a wonderful dinner of 5 different pizzas
and salad. Fred and Guilherme along with Curtis
and Nick, tried their hand at fishing. The scup
were biting like mad! As soon as the hooks hit
the water, they were filled. Guilherme is
promising a tasty treat for tomorrow using the
catch!
We are all looking forward to
anchor watch tonight!
