Member Sail today. The chart image shows
the track out of New Bedford Harbor. Happy 225 USA! The 107-year old
Ernestina celebrated the 4th with a
member sail dedicated to new members. We boarded
42 members at 10:00 for a 3-hour sail into
Buzzards Bay. One of our newest members was 18
month old Emily Coderre. By the end of the sail,
she had the charmed the entire crew. Emily is the
granddaughter of David Tonnessen who is a member
of Ernestina's New Bedford Sea Chantey Chorus.
During the sail, the plankton
net was set and we got a large sample of
copepods, phytoplankton, and cone jellyfish. The
kids onboard had a great time showing all the
adults their discoveries. Chief Mate Scott Cann
said the plankton tasted "just like
chicken" after a taste test. For some
reason, there were no willing volunteers to
second that! The children also made a variety of
daisy chain and Turks head bracelets
The ship returned to State Pier
at 1300 and the members departed the ship looking
forward the upcoming members sails on August 13
