Summer Sound Program with Schooner Sound
Learning #4. Once again,
we set off from Long wharf on Thursday afternoon
with 20 Participants for our final overnight
program of the week. However, Chris Newlan was
not aboard due to a prior commitment. Other staff
members from Sound School filled in.
The weather was great, and we
set the 4 lowers immediately. Our cruise track
took us out of New Haven Harbor, and towards the
Thimbles. Surprise. While the Students were in
Learning Stations, our AB, Pat Merrill, went
aloft with the camera, and took a couple of shots
of the Sound. We sailed past Branton reef again,
and let go the Anchor at 1840. Once the sails
were furled, Dinner was served on deck.
While the Galley Crew (assigned
watch) was finishing with dishes, some of the
crew tried the hands at the Broom
Trick. The pictures might give you an idea of the
agility required. Tim was good. Dan was
fantastic, and able to hold still for a photo.
Anthony was too fast to photograph! Evening
program was another history hunt on the decks of
Ernestina. Anchor Watch followed. It was a cool
and clear night. Everyone enjoyed the stars, and
quiet.
In the Morning, all hands were
up for Hauling back at 0600, and we were underway
towards New Haven again. Some sailing, climbing,
and knot tying took up most of the passage. We
returned to Long Wharf at 0900, and said farewell
to the group who were going to spend the day in
the Harbor on their own boats.
The staff of the Ernestina took
a short break to use the Shore heads, then it was
all hands to task. We had to prepare for a BIG
food delivery. Field Day in the Galley and Fish
Hold took place. Erika B. and Amanda L. took
charge of rebuilding both of the Ships Heads. Pat
managed to fit in some sail repair on the Jumbo.
The Foodservice truck finally arrived late in the
afternoon, and we got to experience the LENGTH of
Long Wharf. It took quite a while to cart all the
produce, canned goods, and Frozen food to the
galley.
As the sun went down, all hands
enjoyed pizza from PEPEs a good day.
