We had anticipated sailing through the night
for the whole trip. Day four we had to get
over the lack of sleep and continue sailing...in
search of whales. We heard stories of
humpbacks playing earlier in the season at
Stellwagen Bank. I guess the whales weren't
very hungry or playful that day because we got
skunked! We then started for our anchorage
near Salem, MA. Once the three schooners,
Ernestina, Harvey Gamage and the Lettie G. Howard
were at anchor with sails struck, the dories were
launched. This crazy rotation of dories,
people, and cheering resulted in the watches
rowing against each other with C watch the
victors. People diving out of their dories
and rowing in circles trying to retrieve lost
oars were only a couple of the mishaps. A
good time was had by all. After a great
dinner we settled in to a few games and
reflecting on the near end of our trip.
24 Hour Plan: The three ship plan to anchor up
behind Misery Island by 1500 and have dory
races. We sailed through the night from
Richmond Island to Stellwagen Bank. We left
the NW corner of the Bank about 1015 this
morning.
Where are all the whales?
