Yard Work at D.N. Kelley & Son Shipyard, Fairhaven, MA
Late April through June 2004

May 25th though June 3rd
Extensive work continues at Kelley's Yard with planking stripped away to be able to inspect and replace futtocks. Futtocks are bolted together to make up the frames (ribs).

Ernestina on the ways.

The shipwrights work to remove planking to gain access

Another view of the port side of the ship looking aft. This is in the area below the galley counter and forward end of the fish hold.

The galley will get a 'face lift' as well. The face of the cabinetry below the counter is removed to gain access below and to be renewed.

Here is the view of the other side of the galley counter. Leoon Poindexter, who you would also find in the credits for the film, Master and Commander, is doing the work on the galley for Ernestina.

The fish hold bilge is opened up for the work.

The ship's sea chest valving is opened up for inspection.

The frames are exposed along the keel.

Fish hold work continues thanks to volunteer and teacher for Ernestina, Paul Anthony.

More planks come off. We need to strip planks back to appropriate points so when new planks go back in the butt placement is appropriate. The places where plank ends come together should be spaced out over the hull to maximize hull strength.

Concrete between the frames has been chipped away. The Frames rest on the keel with the keelson running down the length on the inside. It is all bolted together to a strong backbone.

Another view of the framing.

Carl Moberg from US Coast Guard inspects the hull and works with us to form a plan for renewal and replacement.
