T he Greater Essex and Hudson Girl Scouts
departed yesterday afternoon at 1700 at Liberty
Landing Marina in Jersey City and Ernestina
departed immediately for Yonkers City Pier just
north of the George Washington Bridge. After a sendoff by parents and Mayor
Fred Kalisz Thursday morning, the City of New
Bedford After-School Program students arrived
from New Bedford yesterday evening after an
incredible journey by bus to Providence, RI,
Amtrack Train to Penn Station, Subway to Grand
Central Station and Metro North to Yonkers. They
sat down in a waterfront park for some pizza and
to await the schooner's arrival. The ship came in
later in the evening on time and they settled
down into bunks that are theirs for five days. A
great effort by Polly Zajac, David Eatough and
Dave Monk to make all the connections and on the
ship as planned!
After breakfast and orientation
to the ship, the students went up to the Hudson
River Museum for a tour hosted by the students
from the local school and then an exchange where
our students brought their Yonkers counterparts
down to the ship for a sail.
The track to the right shows
the ship sailing a port track in light wind. Even
though the ship is constantly steering upriver
(up on the chart), the current is ebbing, that
is, moving downriver, for the time. Sometimes the
ship could stem the tide and sometimes not.....
After the sail back to Yonkers
City Pier, the ship took off again for Liberty
Landing Marina at Liberty State Park to lay for
the weekend during the "Ships to Save the Waters" Conference. Pete Seeger is host and
Madame Francine Cousteau is keynote speaker.
