About
9:30 AM we left Greenport , NY dockside. We raised the sail
right after we learned safety procedures
Some of these procedures included:
1.) Don't stand in front of the boom
2) Don't lean over the side
3) Don't run, jump or horseplay
4) Don't yell unless there is an emergency
After this we were assigned to our bunks. We
got a tour of the Schooner Ernestina and it's history. Adam
showed us the computers, the navigation systems and the
barometer.

This morning at 8:30 am a bunch of 7th
graders came aboard this 109-year-old schooner. During the
trip all of us learned how to run a ship as a team. The
first thing we did was to break into three groups. In these
groups we learned navigation, plankton, knots and water
testing. We also got up in groups in the middle of the night
to watch the boat. We got to steer the boat and we had to
pull the sails up and down. We also learned about the boats
history. This trip benefited us in many ways.

We made it safely to the lee of
Gardiners Island
Wind still blowing ENE force 5 and gusty.
Temp is 45 F and feels cold on deck. Relief
below.
Laurie is cooking great stuff and Rhonda is
keeping the program going well. We
sailed 27 nm today, mostly under Fore and Jumbo, with some
help from the Main Engine.
Photos were taken, but can't send them from
