Sixty fourth graders and four chaperones
joined us at the dock in Greenport NY for the Working on
Water program. The students were from Greenport Oyster Pond
and Southhold middle schools. In a six station rotation the
students learned about life aboard a 19th century schooner.
They were brought back in time as educators guided them
through life as a dory fisherman fishing for Cod and Fluke
on the Grand banks. Students were introduced to the cook
on deck and simple machines as well as the cook in the
galley and the culinary choices on board. Before
disembarking students were introduced to the Captain on deck
who helped them navigate with charts and lead lines for a
real life piloting experience, while the Captain below
decks gave them a tour of the aft cabin bringing home
what life was like living aboard a fishing schooner.

We had a second visit from students in
Greenport. The schools involved were Greenport, Oyster Pond
and Southold. Tuesdays group including chaperones totaled a
whopping 86. Things moved smoothly as the students moved
through the six working on water stations. Students enjoyed
blowing the conch shell just as the captain did when
calling back the dory fisherman during the Gloucester
fishing era. Students were delighted to find that one little
girl could win out against three boys in a tug of war when
using simple machines as the cook on deck. Much fun was had
by all before we had the students disembark and waved
goodbye as we set sail for New London CT.
