As the students
arrived this morning a few sprinkles
of rain were falling, luckily it did not rain and
gradually became sunny! The students had learned from
yesterday's group and came more prepared for the wind and
chill out on the water. We had the
same six 20 minute stations as yesterday, Plankton, Water
Testing, Navigation, Simple Machines, Shanties, and Helm and
Bow with one modification: bow watch morphed into a chance for
half of the students to go out on the bowsprit. This was
naturally quite popular. After
rotating through these stations the second "American
Idol" chantey sing off was staged to close the sail. The
winners of the "American Idol at Sea II" contest
were: Jonny, Sam, Chelsea, Andrew, Tyrell, Chantel and
Danielle singing a rocking version of "John
Cherokee." All contestants did a great job learning the
songs of the sea! A
grand time was had by all.
For the evening
member sail, fair weather and a full breeze took us through
the hurricane barrier with a full boat of crew, volunteers,
members and chantey singers. Compared to this mornings
sail with little to no wind, this sail was a thrill for all.
Beating out of the channel, those forward of the break in the
deck got the occasional splash, the chorus group chantied, and
a hearty few stood at the helm and held the Ernestina
on course. At some points in during the evening, the
ship raced along at a bracing nine knots.
