Auburn Middle School Sail
Day Sail 9:30am-1:30pm

Friday, May 30, 2003

Today, the Schooner Ernestina sailed with the fourth group of Auburn Middle School seventh graders to come to New Bedford this week.

Students took time while sailing to learn about charts and navigating, plankton, and seawater quality.  Other activities included, steering the ship, learning about simple machines, and singing historical sea chanties.  Of course nothing could top climbing out onto the most forward part of the ship, the bowsprit.

Just before docking, the Ernestina had her fourth daily “American Idol at Sea” competition, and all the sea shanties were performed with creativity and gusto by the students.

When the Ernestina had returned to the dock at the State Pier again, the smiles on everyone’s faces were the simplest sign of a great day at sea.

Many have a chance to steer... it is amazing to turn 250 tons so exactly.

Haul, haul away, we'll haul away together...

One of the best places to be is on the sprit on a nice day.

OK... I'm not sure what but I think it is improvised... What's his line anyway?

Plankton are small but these students know what to do.

Exxxxpress yourself!

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.

NOAA Chart is provided courtesy of Maptech using Cruising Navigator 4.3 and grabbing the image using Grabit Pro 6.02.
