Today,
the Schooner Ernestina sailed with the fourth group of
Auburn
Middle School
seventh graders to come to
New Bedford
this week.
Students took time while
sailing to learn about charts and navigating, plankton, and
seawater quality. Other
activities included, steering the ship, learning about simple
machines, and singing historical sea chanties.
Of course nothing could top climbing out onto the most
forward part of the ship, the bowsprit.
Just before docking, the
Ernestina had her fourth daily “American Idol at Sea”
competition, and all the sea shanties were performed with
creativity and gusto by the students.
When the Ernestina had
returned to the dock at the State Pier again, the smiles on
everyone’s faces were the simplest sign of a great day at
sea.
