The eight grade class
from Williams Middle School joined the crew of the Ernestina
today for a sail into Buzzards Bay. On the sail students
learned to set the fore sail and jumbo and how to coil line in
a ballantine. Next students navigated and the examined
the history of the Ernestina. Students
used a plankton tow to catch phytoplankton and zooplankton to
study under their microscopes on deck. Other
students learned how to be a crew member on bow watch
while others were getting a turn at the helm in steering
the boat as we sailed. Fun was had by all.

Hauling
together is the only way to raise the mainsail; it weighs
thousands of pounds.
