Williams Middle School Sail
Day Sail 9am-1pm

Monday, June 2, 2003

The eight grade class from Williams Middle School joined the crew of the Ernestina today for a sail into Buzzards Bay.  On the sail students learned to set the fore sail and jumbo and how to coil line in a ballantine.  Next students navigated and the examined the history of the Ernestina.

Students used a plankton tow to catch phytoplankton and zooplankton to study under their microscopes on deck.

Other students learned how to be a crew member on bow watch while others were getting a turn at the helm in steering the boat as we sailed.  Fun was had by all.

Hauling together is the only way to raise the mainsail; it weighs thousands of pounds.

The chart image above shows the track for the sail out of New Bedford 'round the Shoals and back..

All hands to the halyard first and then, once the sail is set, it's up behind, drop the line!

Plotting the position and getting a course off the chart.

The foresail is on the way up as the line gets passed aft with a pull.

The salinity of Buzzards Bay is checked with a salinometer.

Plankton are coming as the warmer water temperatures come in.... soon.

Huddled around the compass at the helm.

More plankton to ID.

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
