With 12 crew and 24
students and chaperones from the TTT Mentor Program in
Cambridge, MA we set sail from New Bedford at 1130 this
morning. Lunch followed orientations,
and due to the light rain the group split into watches to eat.
Not everyone was happy with the motion onboard.
But smiles prevailed.
Stations were held on deck for the program.
Topics included Navigation , Plankton/ and Helm, then
more stations after a snack: History, Water
sampling, and Simple Machines.
The breeze vanished around 1600, and a
steady rain was falling. With a Low approaching the
area, it was time to anchor. We found ourselves across
the Bay, close to the Elizabeth Islands.
1800 - At anchor off Weepecket Islands in
Buzzards Bay. Some write up
experiences from the students on the 24 hour sail follow:
"My favorite part of this trip was
eating lunch, catching plankton, and water testing. When we
ate lunch we got to eat to eat burritos. But we got to make
our own burrito. I putted a lot of meat and sauce. I like the
cheese." ~Milton Chan
"On the Ernestina we seen some plankton
that we caught. We seen jellyfish in the water. This was
very fun. The bunks were comfortable. Some food we had was burritos,
and muffin. We learned about the history of the boat. I slept
in the fish hold. It is called that because fishers used to
store fish there. Now there is bunks there. I
liked the experience." ~Nicholas
Fantasia
"On the Ernestina a lot of things are
different than on land for example if we needed to use
the bathroom we had to pull the pump 15 times and then five
times to fill it with water. The stations we did were very
fun, my favorite was the one that we looked at plankton."
