New Bedford Global Learning Charter School
9am-1pm

Thursday, June 12, 2003

June 12th brought the New Bedford Global Learning Charter School on board the Ernestina. Students were able to study marine science, specifically our environment and ecology and how that is effected by natural processes as well as human impact.

Jay Amster talked with students about water quality and the marine environment while students were able to examine indigenous species in a touch tank.  Students were able to learn about the impact of the recent oil spill in our coastal waters.

Program Coordinators: Rhonda Moniz
Captain: Amanda Madeira

SEEAL operates under the auspices of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts. This project has been funded, in part, by the Massachusetts Environmental Trust.

Today's trip ran out the harbor channel and back in, a straight run in the light air.

Chartwork is a natural component of the program.

A close look at the marine world is too.

Steering the ship by taking a turn at the helm.

The plankton net goes over for a short tow.

Everyone haul away!

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.

NOAA Chart is provided courtesy of Maptech using Cruising Navigator 4.3 and grabbing the image using Grabit Pro 6.02.
