Dockside at the
Nantucket Boat Basin, three UMASS Boston students began their
week-long stay aboard the Ernestina with a thorough
orientation to watches and life aboard the ship. We
got underway at 11:00am with the UMASS crew and 8 members
who had sailed with us from New Bedford on Saturday. We
had a great force 4 wind out of the northeast, allowing us to
turn off the engine and enjoy a sail across Nantucket Sound.
The UMASS students took turns assuming the watch and gained
further orientation to the operation of the ship. Adrian
and Becca Cann, two young members, also got an exciting chance
to spend some time out on the ship's bowsprit and aloft in
the fore shrouds. After a short rendezvous with the
Alabama off of Martha's Vineyard, the Ernestina tied
up at the WHOI dock in Woods Hole just in time for the eight
members to catch a 5:00 bus back to New Bedford. In
the evening, the ship opened up to a community potluck dinner
and Norman Baker entertained those who attended with an
account of his transatlantic sail with Thor Heyerdahl aboard
the reed boats the Rah and Rah II in the 1960's and
70's. Program Coordinators:
