Under clear skies with
little wind and the warmest temperatures we have seen all
week, we began the day with drills alongside. Then the
UMASS Boston and Ernestina crew joined Ru Morrisson,
who researches plankton growth patterns in coastal New
England, for a tour of WHOI's facilities and a talk on his
studies and the technology he uses in his research. Ru
also introduced us to John Kemp, the head of WHOI's buoy and
mooring facility. John impressed us with the latest
technologies in open water and weather data collection
designed, engineered, manufactured and exported around the
world from WHOI's facility. The Ernestina crew
then moved on to tour of WHOI's scientific vessel, the Oceanus.
After lunch, we packed in a quick trip to MBL's facility and
got a first-hand look and biological account of the
research organisms there, including squid, toad fish, crabs,
sea urchins, lobster and corals from MBL's Dave Remsen. At
3:30 PM, the new and old crew gathered back at the ship to
board 50 passengers sailing to Martha's Vineyard in
celebration of Marty Tulloch's retirement from teaching.
Everyone enjoyed a warm and sunny sail to Vineyard Haven with
a southerly downwind breeze that carried us against the
current. The UMASS Boston crew continued their education
in safe line handling, sail theory and operation of the
vessel. After disembarking Marty's
party to catch the ferry back to Woods Hole, the remaining
crew enjoyed a quiet dinner dockside and rested up for
tomorrow's activities on the Vineyard. Program Coordinators:
