After an early morning
start, the Ernestina and her crew departed from
Vineyard Haven at 0900 for New Bedford with a force 2 wind out
of the southwest and fog. The UMASS Boston crew spent
time standing watch and putting their navigation knowledge to
practical use by plotting the ship's location and course.
They also continued their ocean studies with further water
sampling and setting a plankton tow. We found some
isopods adrift in eel grass as well as the immature larval
crab, megalops.
After lunch underway, we tied up at our
homeport dock in New Bedford at 1400. The weather turned
fair and warm in the afternoon, which was spent rowing
dories in the inner harbor and competing in a pin chase.
After dinner on board, the tired crew took some time for
journal writing, reading and games on board and then watched Moby-Dick
the movie on deck. We all turned in for a good night's
