Wild Harbor to Boston
Harbor Islands - June 21
Some crew enjoyed a stunning sunrise on
anchor watch early Saturday morning and everyone else woke up
to cloudy skies and a chilly first day of summer.
After hauling back the anchor, we were
underway up the Cape Cod Canal toward Boston. The crew
stood regular watches, giving the UMASS Boston students time
to put the skills and knowledge they have been acquiring over
the past week to use.
The wind was force 1 to 2 out of the
northwest, meaning we needed to keep the motor on for much of
the sail. However, crew were given the opportunity to
use their navigation skills, do a couple of plankton tows,
practice knots, collect regular water samples for analysis,
climb a loft and reflect on their surroundings and experience.
We dropped anchor at 1900 in Peddocks
Island, about six miles from Boston Inner Harbor. After
an all-hands dinner in the fo'c'sle due to showers, some of
the crew gathered for a final evening of entertainment
down below. We sang songs, played games, told jokes and
generally enjoyed each other's company after a week of getting
to know each other. Throughout the night, we stood
anchor watch with winds 10-15 knots and rain showers. Program Coordinators:
