Another beautiful day for a sail, as the
weather cooled down a bit to allow us to enjoy a pleasant day
on Buzzards Bay. With some high cloud cover and a steady
northerly breeze, the scouts turned out in the morning for a
long day on the water. After some orientation, we set the four
lowers before leaving the New Bedford Harbor.
The jumbo crew beat the jib crew in the headsail-setting
race, but all were winners as everyone let out an
exceptionally boisterous cry as we cleared the hurricane
barrier.
The morning was all about oceanography, as we covered the
physical (water chemistry), micro (plankton), and macro
(sharks!!). The stead breeze allowed us to sail all the way
past the final buoys marking the channel at a
moderate but steady pace, despite Captain Willi's resistance
to sending up some more sail, the old curmudgeon!
Kate's cooking pleased all hands as we dined our lunch on
deck, and in the afternoon we all got a nice dose of
seamanship, as we covered helmsmanship, forward lookout,
navigation, and, of course, the Ernestina's colorful history.
With sea shanties, knot tying, and a little time on the
bowsprit (including a nice furl of the jib!) as we came
back into the harbor, the day-long sail left crew and scouts
alike contented and ready for another one of Kate's
magnificent creations alongside before disembarking. Robert
stunned all with his reportedly "inhuman" capacity
to
consume dinner while still leaving room for a few of the
chocolate chip and pecan cookies that topped off the day with
a sweet finale!
