SouthCoast Learning Network Sail
Overnight Program with Randy Peffer
Friday, July 11 through Saturday, July 12

Day One: July 11

We motor sailed across Buzzard Bay from New Bedford with a full ship for a course offered by the South Coast Learning Network (SCLN) featuring Randal Peffer, author of Logs of the Dead Pirates Society.

When a ship leaves New Bedford and runs the channel out past Butler's Flat light, the course down this fairly straight run, if run out across Buzzards Bay, would come in at Kettle Cove on Naushon Island. We had the anchorage to ourselves and spent the calm night listening to loons calling from inshore.

After the ship was squared away for the night and dinner dishes were done, Randy read several passages from his book and then we traded stories from the past. Ernestina ex-Effie M. Morrissey has come through these waters before under the command of Bob Bartlett and Cmdr. Alexander Forbes as well as during the Cape Verdean packet years.

Program Coordinator: Rhonda Moniz
Captain: Gregg Swanzey

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
