Students
and crew aboard the Ernestina were up at 4:30 am to start the
sail to Mystic. The rain came in as we traveled up the river
making for a challenging few hours for all aboard but everyone did an excellent job
of sailing through to Mystic where we docked at Mystic Seaport
Museum bowsprit to bowsprit with the Bark Charles W. Morgan
(two exemplary New Bedford ships!). The students disembarked for a full day of lectures
and exploration of the historical seaport. Dr. Walker lectured
on early exploration aboard vessels much like the Ernestina
and the Charles W. Morgan, the last whaling vessel who hailed
from Ernestina's home port New Bedford, MA. The Morgan is permanently
docked at Mystic Seaport. While
we were docked at Chubb's Wharf, Randy, Jackie and Jacob
Peffer came in on their Schooner Sarah Abbot. They
were aboard Ernestina several weeks ago for a
SouthCoast Learning Network program. Another
friend of Ernestina and past crewmember, Laurie Belisle,
serves as captain of the Neath and gave us a lot of
local knowledge to navigate the narrow channel of the Mystic
River. Program
