Boston University Explorations in Learning
Five-day program from New Bedford, MA to New Haven, CT

Tuesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 26, 2003

Day Four: July 25

Another early morning star found the crew and students headed to Falkner Island, a wildlife preserve three nautical miles off the coast of Guilford, CT. After an early rise once again to catch the high tide for our transit back out the Mystic River, we motorsailed against a very strong ebb tide up into Long Island Sound. The tide runs more than five knots in The Race!

The sun brought a beautiful day and sailing to the Island was filled with navigation classes, sail theory classes, knot tying classes and interesting maritime history lectures by Dr. Walker. Students enjoyed going out on the bowsprit while underway as watches rotated with turns at both the bow and helm. After all the activity and learning on board a swim call was in order as soon as the anchor was dropped. Following the cool dip everyone gathered on deck for another amazing meal by our steward, Laurie Weitzen.

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
