Six-day Transit New Haven, CT to Boston, MA

August 3, 2003
Day 1: Transit New Haven to Falkner Island

We departed Long Wharf about 5:30pm after a couple hours of orientation and discussion of emergency procedures. After motoring off the dock, we set the foresail and jumbo as we exited New Haven Harbor and headed toward Falkner Island, 3 miles off Guilford, CT to anchor for the night.

New Haven to Falkner Island

We’re on our way to Falkner Island. It’s now 7:40 pm and at about 3:30 we were given a very detailed orientation of the Ernestina. If I’ve learned one thing about this ship so far, it’s that the bunks were not made for tall people (I am still debating if the Cape Verdeans that came over on this ship were midgets). We received a very thorough explanation on many important things: how to pull halyards, how to put the lifejackets on, and (most importantly) how to use the “suction toilet”.

We just ate our dinner about 30 minutes ago. Miracles come out of that little galley I tell you…miracles. I got a chance to steer the ship which was an awesome experience. She sails beautifully. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this week.

The trip began with the arrival of the students and their families. Even though the crowd of people who came at three o’clock was large, by the time we set off, an hour and a half later, only the very patient and determined parents were left (my parents not included… ahem) when we departed from New Haven. We were shown our bunks (which were much smaller than the size of a refrigerator box) and then separated into our three watches. In our smaller groups, we were taught many safety procedures and new names for the kitchen (the galley), the bathrooms (the heads), the floors (the soles) and many others. After we set off, we put up two of the smaller sails, but since we wanted to reach our destination of Falkner Island by nightfall, we used the motor the entire way. Tomorrow morning we will put up all of the sails on this amazing vessel and, as it is said in Pirates of the Caribbean, we will chase the horizon as we cruise to New Bedford.
