Six-day Transit New Haven, CT to Boston, MA

Day 5: Provincetown to Stellwagen Bank to the Boston Harbor Islands

The beginning of the track for the day as the ship departs Provincetown Harbor and rounds Race Point for the Southeastern corner of Stellwagen Bank where whales have been seen feeding lately.

We see numerous Humpback Whales along with a couple Minke Whales and many Shearwaters and Petrels feeding off the eastern slope of Stellwagen Bank. We can see the waters upwelling around us.

Peddocks Island in the Boston Harbor Islands is our destination at the end of the day.

The track for the day from Provincetown to the Boston Harbor Islands covers more than 60 miles.

Today was FUN!  We started doing our count off and then we did chores.  It was very tiring but we got through it.  We pulled up the anchor and set sails and then when on the way to boston int was very cool because we saw whales and a big tuna fish jumping out of the water.  The whales were so cool and they said hi to us by waving their fin.  That was awesome.  After we got out of whale territory (Stellwagen Bank) we saw dogfish (sharks).  It was so cool.  We had a class about sharks and whales and that was also cool.  We also have stories at night that is cool too.

Raising sail bound for the Bank.

Stand by the halyard!

Ready on the jib sheet and the halyard!

The jib goes up aloft.

Students get a chance to go aloft. Whale Ho!

Making the move onto the spreaders at 85 feet off the water.

All hands search the horizon for whales.

A Humpback Whale crosses our bow.

The small dorsal fin and large white flippers make the Humpback easy to identify.

The whale gives us a show. This is called flippering and you can see the fluted throat that allows the whale to take large gulps of seawater and strain out the small fish and crustaceans.

Humpbacks have white markings on the underside of their flukes that are like a finger print and unique for each whale. Here the whale is sounding, or going down, for several minutes.

The daily log entry is recorded.

We would like to thank Lotus and IBM for donation of software, hardware and funding to enable regular electronic updates from the ship.
